Know Your Rights

Federal Law prohibits debt collectors from doing the following:

  • Leaving voicemails without saying it's a debt collector.
  • Calling you repeatedly.
  • Contacting you before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. without authorization.
  • Using obscene or profane language.
  • Threatening to ruin your reputation.
  • Contacting you at work without authorization.
  • Contacting you if the creditor knows that you have an attorney.
  • Contacting relatives, neighbors or other third parties to find out information other than your address, phone number or employer.
  • Asking a third party more than once for information on how to contact you.
  • Contacting you if you have notified the creditor that you do not believe you owe the money in question.
  • Sending you letters without notifying you of the identity of the current creditor.
  • Sending you letters that do not specify the amount of debt you owe.
  • Attempting to collect processing fees for credit card payments on debt.
